GENESEO, N.Y. - Four SUNY Geneseo student-athletes earned State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Athlete of the Week recognition, announced on Monday afternoon. Women's volleyball sophomore Gabrielle Ayzenberg, women's swimming & diving junior Samantha Reichman, men's swimming & diving senior Mitchell Phelps and men's ice hockey junior Tyson Empey each received conference honors.
Ayzenberg averaged 6.00 digs/set in the Knights' three matches at the Frostburg Quad-Match last week. She compiled a career-high 38 digs in Geneseo's five-set loss to Clarkson on Friday, before totaling 23 digs in a 3-0 sweep of the host Bobcats and 17 digs in the 3-2 setback to Salisbury on Saturday.
Reichman began the season as Geneseo's top diver, earning a first-place finish off the one-meter board and second place off the three-meter as the Knights defeated NCAA Division I Canisius on Saturday. Reichman posted a six-dive score of 245.25 for first place in the one-meter and 247.50 in the three-meter.
Phelps opened the 2018-19 campaign with a trio of solid races as the Knights fell to NCAA Division I Canisius on Saturday. Phelps earned a first-place finish in the 200 free, clocking in at 1:47.23, and then took second in the 100 back, touching up at 54.39. He also swam a leg for Geneseo's 200 medley relay, helping the team to a second-place finish (1:38,03).
Empey notched his second-career hat-trick along with an assist in Geneseo's 8-0 win at Neumann, Saturday, after totaling a goal and an assist in Friday's 10-0 win at King's (Pa.). He leads the conference in goals (4) and points (6) after the season's opening weekend.
