WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey standout Stephen Collins '17 was invited to preseason camp with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Skating alongside the likes of perennial NHL All-Stars Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, Collins will be in the running to make the roster for the 2017-18 squad.
Last winter, Collins was named a First-Team All-American and runner-up for the Sid Watson Award, given annually by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) to the best NCAA Division III men's ice hockey player in the country.
Collins was the first player in program history to be named a repeat First-Team All-American, and was only the second player to land multiple All-America recognition, joining goalie Mark Breeden '99 who was named a second-team honoree in 1998 and 1999. Twelve players have now brought home 14 All-America honors in Geneseo history
Also named the Herb Hammond State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Year for the second-straight season, Collins finished the season ranked third in Division III with a career-high 48 points, including 29 assists which is the fifth-highest total in the nation.
The Capitals are slated to play seven preseason games, starting with a road matchup with the New Jersey Devils on Sept. 18. Visit the Washington Capitals website for a complete preseason schedule.
