GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team banded together with the Junior Ice Knights and their families to participate in the inaugural Matthew Hutchinson First Responder Walk on Sunday, celebrating all the first responders in the Geneseo area while also raising mental health awareness.
Over 175 participants walked around campus and the Village of Geneseo, delivering personalized care packages to members of SUNY Geneseo's University Police Department and First Response team, as well as the Livingston County Sheriff's Office, Geneseo Police Department and Geneseo Fire Department.
"I thought the event was very special for many reasons," said Geneseo men's ice hockey coach Chris Schultz. "Making time to thank our local first responders for all they do for our community is important, along with spreading the word about the importance of mental health and how big an effect it has on our daily lives."
The event was named in honor of former Geneseo men's ice hockey player Matthew Hutchinson, who also volunteered with the Geneseo Fire Department before his passing in 2016.
