Women's Basketball Pulls Away At Cortland For 77-52 Victory

CORTLAND, N.Y. - A well-balanced offense led the No. 23 Geneseo Women's Basketball team to a win over SUNYAC opponent Cortland on Friday night. 

Senior guard Kara Houppert led five double-digit scorers with 14 points. Senior wing Kayleigh Cavanaugh netted 13 while sophomore guard Kelsey Poplawski matched a season-high with 12. Sophomore forward McKenna Brooks and senior forward Bridgit Ryan both scored 10. The Knights shot 49.1% and were just two points shy of their highest offensive output of the season.

Geneseo began the game on a 7-0 run and Houppert added a pair of threes to keep the squad ahead through the first quarter. A Ryan layup made it 17-11 at the end of the first.

The second quarter saw Cortland pull within two points, but back-to-back triples from Poplawski propelled the team to an eight-point lead. The Red Dragons cut back into the lead but the Knights scored five straight to close the period, taking a 32-23 advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half Geneseo pulled away, outscoring Cortland 45-29. The Knights shot a stellar 72.7% throughout the second half, going 16-for-22 from the floor including 6-for-8 from behind the arc. Senior forward Katie Vienneau scored all eight of her points in the second half helping the squad to pull away and ensure the victory.

The Knights improve to 19-0 on the year, with a 12-0 mark in the SUNYAC. The team will continue their road trip, taking on Oswego on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
