Women's Basketball Escapes Oswego With 62-48 Victory

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Senior guard Kayleigh Cavanaugh scored 16 of her team-high 17 points in the second half to lead SUNY Geneseo back from a two-point halftime deficit to a 62-48 victory over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponent Oswego on Saturday at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

The Knights improved to 20-0 on the season (13-0 SUNYAC), tying with the 1994-95 squad for the second-longest winning streak to start a season in program history (27, 1992-93).

Sophomore forward McKenna Brooks and senior guard Katie Durand each netted 11 while senior guard Kara Houppert scored eight points, dished out six assists, and grabbed five rebounds. The Knights allowed Oswego to shoot 40.0% in the first half, but buckled down on defense in the second half limiting the Lakers to just 19 points on 24.0% shooting from the floor.

Geneseo entered the second quarter with a 17-13 lead but the Lakers drained their first two baskets to tie the game. A three-pointer from first-year guard Sara Ciotti gave the Knights a five-point lead with 4:50 remaining but a 10-3 Oswego run led the home team to a 29-27 advantage at the halftime break.

Out of the locker room, Cavanaugh ignited her squad with a three-pointer to put the Knights ahead 30-29 just 1:04 into the period. Oswego regained the lead later in the quarter but Geneseo finished the frame on an 11-2 run, spurred on by eight Cavanaugh points, to take a 45-37 lead into the final period.

In the fourth, the Knights scored 12 of their 17 points on foul shots and layups, working the ball around to get easy looks against the Lakers. Geneseo out-rebounded its opponent, 27-13, in the second half, holding off Oswego for the win.

The squad will test their undefeated mark again on Friday, February 3 when they travel to Brockport.
