No. 18 Women's Basketball Stays Perfect At New Paltz, 56-39

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior guard Kara Houppert finished with a team-high 18 points to lead the Knights to a 56-39 victory over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponent New Paltz on Saturday at the Hawk Center. 

The senior tied a single-game program record with a 5-for-5 effort from behind the arc. Sophomore forward McKenna Brooks added her second consecutive double-double, recording 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Katie Vienneau tied a season-high with 11 points while senior forward Bridgit Ryan pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds.

The Knights held the Hawks to just 27.3% (15-for-55) shooting from the floor and outrebounded their opponents 46-30. It was the first time all season that New Paltz had been held below 40 points.

Geneseo battled with the Hawks evenly through the first four minutes but the Knights used an 11-3 run to finish the quarter with a 20-11 lead. Geneseo was limited to just five points in the second quarter as the Hawks drew within three points. The two teams entered halftime with the Knights leading 25-22. 

In the third quarter, Geneseo allowed New Paltz just six points on 2-for-14 shooting from the floor. Meanwhile the Knights netted 15 points in the quarter to extend their lead to double-digits. 

In the final frame, Houppert drilled three straight three-pointers and a foul shot to go on her own personal 10-2 run, giving Geneseo a comfortable cushion. The team coasted the rest of the way, earning the 56-39 victory.

The 18th-ranked Knights improve to 23-0 on the season with a 16-0 mark in conference play. The squad will return home for its final two games of the regular season, facing off with Oswego on Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m.
