Women's Tennis Seeks Seventh-Straight Conference Title

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team returns to the courts this fall in search of its seventh-consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title. The Knights open their title defense in 2017 with a trip to Oswego to take on the Lakers on Friday, Sept. 1.

Five of six starters from the 2016 campaign return, led by seniors Rachel Ollis, Anika Pornpitaksuk and Lauren Salzano. Pornpitaksuk and Salzano were named SUNYAC Doubles Team of the Year in 2016, while returning juniors Vanessa Lam-Tran and Nina Lurie were each chosen as SUNYAC all-stars a season ago as well. Junior Jennifer Buckhout also returns to the roster for the 2017 campaign.

Third-year head coach Jason Stephens has added four new faces to the team in 2017. First-years Gretchen Ayoub, Cate Gluchowski, Dana Sorrentino and Skyler Virginia will add depth to the roster as they contend to crack the starting lineup.

The Knights dive into conference play right away with their first match at Oswego on Sept. 1 before taking on Fredonia in the home opener on Sept. 7. Geneseo will compete in three tournament-style events beginning with the William Smith Invitational, Sept. 9-10, the St. Lawrence Invitational on Sept. 16-17 and the ITA New York Regional Tournament hosted by Skidmore College beginning Sept. 22. The squad will host conference rival New Paltz on Sept. 29 in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC championship match before closing the conference schedule hosting Cortland on Oct. 5. The Knights will face a new challenge this season, traveling to NCAA Division I affiliate Niagara University for a match on Oct. 6 before beginning SUNYAC Tournament play on Oct. 14.
