GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior middle blocker Paige Pendleton totaled a match-high nine kills while junior libero Danielle Sayler added 12 digs to lead the Knights to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Nazareth in women's volleyball action, Wednesday.
Geneseo (13-14) used a 7-2 run that included two service aces by first-year setter Emily Ast to take an early 10-4 lead. The Golden Flyers got back within three, 12-9, but couldn't close the gap as the Knights limited them to a .128 hitting percentage to take the first set.
Nazareth (15-15) fell behind, 7-2, to start the second set but fought back with an 8-1 run to take a 10-8 lead. Tied, 12-12, Geneseo out-scored Nazareth 13-5, including two kils apiece by Pendleton and junior middle blocker Courtney Cleary, to earn the second-set victory.
Nazareth took early control of the third set, 8-4, but six-consecutive points gave the Knights a 10-8 lead it never relinquished. Tied, 10-10, the Geneseo defense keyed a 7-0 run, that included three assisted blocks by Pendlton and two by junior outside hitter Emma Lannon. The Knights' lead grew to as many as eight down the stretch as the squad earned its fourth victory in five outings.
Geneseo will be back in action this weekend, hosting Oswego on Friday (5:00 p.m) as well as Potsdam (10:00 a.m.) and Fredonia (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday for the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play of the season.
